More than three dozen readers snapped a shot (or combed through their archives) for The Island Packet and The Beaufort Gazette's first monthly photo contest. The theme was "In Flight." As you might expect, we saw many submissions of birds, particularly the egrets, eagles, pelicans, osprey and more that all make Beaufort County's natural spaces so breathtaking. But we also saw plenty of photos from the Beaufort Air Show and a handful from photographers who didn't take the theme literally. One of those, Hilton Head Island resident Terri Philpot's photo of her son, Jackson, jumping at the new Shelter Cove playground, won.
The contest was judged by multimedia editor Drew Martin; Phil Heim, the man behind the lens at BeaufortPics.com, the Facebook page by the same name and a new gallery on Port Republic Street; and Eat Sleep Play Beaufort, a popular community Facebook page and website. In order to name a winner, the judges each ranked their five favorite photos out of the entries we received; points were assigned based on the ranking each judge gave. Their feedback is included on some of the photos below.
May's theme is "Think Spring". Click or tap here for details on how to submit your entry.

Photographer's caption: The picture was taken at the new Shelter Cove playground, which we went to in late March. My son, Jackson, is a natural-born thrill seeker, therefore, he created a challenge of posing mid-flight after launching himself from the swings. Now as a parent I cringed at the thought of injury and recklessness, but he insisted on getting the "best shot." It only took us a couple shots to get one he liked.

Photographer's caption: I took this photo on March 26, 2015. The eagle was fishing in North Lake in Rose Hill. I was enjoying the beginning of spring, looking at the pollen coated 'gators and a rookery of wood storks, I just happened to see this eagle fishing. After several unsuccessful attempts she managed to get lunch and share it with a juvenile. A great day. (Photographer-provided camera info: Nikon D90 with a 18 - 270 mm lens f/6.3, exposure time 1/500 sec.)

Tom Cloud, Hilton Head | Title: "Osprey with Lunch"
Photographer's caption: While driving in Sea Pines on May 28, 2013, I saw the head of a bird in a lagoon across from Lawton Stables. I pulled over, grabbed my camera, jumped down into the lagoon and started shooting. The osprey fought hard and went down two more times into the water before successfully carrying his lunch to the bank.

Photographer's caption: I captured this brown pelican at Shelter Cove Harbor on November 20, 2014 where I frequently bird watch with a friend. The bird was just coming out of the water after a splendid nose-dive to catch lunch. The splash of water showing the action makes the picture complete. (Photographer-provided camera info: Canon SX50 at f/8, 1/1600sec, ISO-800)

Skye Pejsa, Beaufort | Title: None provided
Photographer's caption: There was no particular reason for me to take the photo; I just take pictures when I see something I find inspiring. This photo was taken on April 18, 2015. I was at the Port Royal Crab Festival that particular day, toting around my phone for pictures. Many different shops were set up for the festival, and one such was selling wood crafts, in this case, a swinging bench. The day was stifling hot but had a gusty breeze every now and then. I saw the price tag on the swing chain flutter with the breeze, and to me it seemed liked it was trying to escape. To me, looking up at the little tag tugging on it's rope leash, with the sky just behind it, the tag could definitely be defined as "In Flight". (Photographer-provided camera info: cellphone)

Photographer's caption: At the corner of Greenwood Dr. and Plantation Dr. in Sea Pines Plantation, HHI, SC. 3/01/2015. Brown pelicans are often seen diving into the Atlantic for fish. What made this image special was, they chose a fisherman's favorite inland tidal pool to capture dinner! Walkers, bikers and photographers watched as pelicans soared high and dove straight down into the pool. This is one of 57 images I made that day. The pelicans have relocated their hunting back to the Atlantic! (Photographer-provided camera info: Canon 6D, Canon lens 70-200mm, f/2.8 L IS USM 77 Metadata: f/2.8, 1/2000 of a sec, ISO 400, Focal length 160mm)

Robert L. Gard, Sun City | Title: "Turkey Vulture in Flight"
Photographer's caption: Ft Gibson Dam, Eastern Oklahoma, December 1998. The light reflecting from the concrete roadway atop the dam helped to fill the underside of the vulture and compensate for the back light of a sunny day. This bird is admired by both native Americans and aeronautical engineers for its efficiency of flight -- being able to soar for long periods with little apparent effort. (Photographer-provided camera info: Canon EOS Rebel , 300 mm lens with 1.4 telextender, shoulder stock)

Joseph R. Nelson, Lady's Island | Title: None provided
Photographer's caption: On December 23, 2012, my husband and I were out on Old Island, which is located close to Fripp Island. He got some pretty good shots that day of an eagle flying above us guarding its huge nest, which was located at the very top of the tallest tree in the area. (Photographer-provided camera info: Nikon D3200 24mp camera with 300mm lens)

Scott Horowitz, Sun City | Title: None provided
Photographer's caption: Iris Chester submitted. This photo was taken by my son, Scott Horowitz, when he and his family were visiting me in Sun City last summer (2014). I was with my grandchildren watching this beautiful bird sitting on the edge of the dock at Riverbend. It was amazing how close we were to the bird before he took off. What I didn't know was that Scott was right behind us with his camera and took what I thought was an amazing picture. (Photographer-provided camera info: Point and shoot camera)

Elyse Larew, Lady's Island | Title: None provided
Photographer's caption: Photography is a hobby of mine; as a choreographer, I like to photograph things in motion. It gives me motivation for new movement. This was taken in 2010 on Lost Island with a monster of a camera, an old Nikon D1X. I've since purchased much nicer cameras but haven't had much time for photography. I plan to get back into the swing of things this year!

Christina Poschmann, Bluffton | Title: None provided
Photographer's caption: Canadian geese have been coming to our birdfeeders picking up seeds on the ground. The female was guarded by the male, and in this instance she flew across our pool. However, for some days now she has been our only visitor. Taken April 18. (Photographer-provided camera info: Samsung NX 300, 50-200 zoom,1/200 sec., f /5.6, iso 800.)
Eat Sleep Play Beaufort: "For any parent, this would be a money shot. For any kid, it tells your friends that 'I'm the bomb.' "
Phil Heim, Beaufort Pics: "Another really good action photo where the child is frozen in mid-air. The expression on his face and colored pebbles tossed in the air are great. Lots of color in the photo. I normally don't care a lot for staged photos however, this one is excellent."
Drew Martin, multimedia editor: "This photo could have been a contender (for top spot) in my book had the photographer thought about his background and composition. I give it accolades because it's different. Think about your camera angles and your shooting location - photographer could have been laying on their back shooting up. The good thing about a staged photo is you can do it over and over until you either get it right or your model gets tried of performing."
